Starting Up Baseball R Us

I've been writing about the San Francisco Giants and baseball for a while now, and I'm starting up studying using R as a hobby (and hopefully as an expertise, at some point).  I'll be using this blog to post my R analyses, separate from my usual blog posts on the Giants, though I haven't decided how exactly I'll decide which blog will get which post, other than only R analyses will be posted here.

My Short Saber Life Story

While I was not one of Bill James earliest book buyer, once he was a nationally published author, I bought and loved his books, when I was in college.  This came naturally to me because I've been a math nerd since my second grade teacher, the great Miss Cooper, noted that I was good at math, and then I've been working as a market analyst for nearly 30 years now.

I started doing baseball analysis more intently (when younger, I came up with a formula for winning percentage based on Runs Scored divided by Runs Scored plus Runs Allowed, similar to the more familiar Pythagorean that Bill James made famous) after the 2002 season, when I analyzed how the Giants could be as good or better even though Jeff Kent left the team as a free agent, posting it on USENET (no one believed me).  I then worked at Fanhome, helping write up articles and weekly prospect reports, before branching off from there to my blogging life.

As with my other baseball blog, I do this because I don't see this type of analysis done by others, and thus am doing it for myself.  Only now, I'll be using R for the analyses I post here.  And hopefully others will find it interesting as well.

Best always, ogc
